Vestfold
The County of Vestfold is situated in the south of Norway.
Vestfold is the smallest and one of the most densely populated counties in Norway. The largest towns Larvik, Tønsberg, Sandefjord and Horten are all located along the coast.
Vestfold is easily reached by air, ferry and train.
The Viking Trail
Vikingveien is a 60 km long track from Mølen to Borre. Travelling this distance, you will discover large, significant burial mounds, remains of Norway’s first town and where the most important finds from the Viking Age were made. Vestfold even has its own Viking ships, both original and replicas.
Sandefjord is a modern town with great variation. The town has an interesting history, beautiful nature and a variety of cultural happenings. Sandefjord is located 120km south of Oslo.
Norske Løve is the name of a 19th century fortress built from 1852 to 1859 to protect Karljohansvern naval station in Horten. Its name is a reference to the Coat of Arms of Norway. The fort is still a military area.
On the outskirts of Horten you come to Karljohansvern, which is surrounded by the sea. Here you can enjoy life. A quiet place in an urban environment, with space to hike and bike in the most beautiful surroundings imaginable. Parts of the area are preserved in order to protect bird wild life and plants.
In Larvik you will find a rich variety of interesting buildings and construction, both ultramodern design in the new Thor Heyerdahl school and in the cultural house Bølgen and traditional housing, buildings and churches from earlier époques.
The long and rich history of Norway has left traces and traditions that should be explored by any visitors. Be sure to be told the story of the Viking heritage.
Kaupang in Larvik was Norway’s first town. Here you can visit and learn about the Viking´s first Norwegian trading post. Kaupang is placed in Tjølling, a few kilometers east of the centre of Larvik.
